Social Media Monday

Today is Monday, when we bring you our favorite social media article of the day.

NewTeeVee is reporting that 9 million households will be opting out of cable television by 2016.

The trend is already apparent. What does that mean for Big Live and its users? Nothing but good news. We’re already home to some of the best content on television, like episodes of Family Guy, 30 Rock, Louie, and Glee, and we’re completely free. Plus, we give you the option to talk to any of your friends while you watch, no matter how far away they are, and make new friends from the crowd watching the show you like.

Sorry, cable TV.

Moment of silence.

Very Sad News—Steve Jobs Has Died

Steve Jobs died at age 56 today. The visionary co-founder of Apple shared an amazing life with the world. We will never forget him.

Today’s Video of the Day is his 2005 Stanford Commencement speech.

http://www.biglive.com/bl/stage/index/stage/1049

“Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma — which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of others’ opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.” —Steve Jobs, 2005

Great words from a great man. Rest in peace, Steve Jobs.

Social Media Monday

Today is Monday, which means Big Live has some interesting social media news to share with you. Here’s a cool article we were perusing today by Nikhil Chawla at mediaredifined.com:

http://www.mediaredefined.com/blog/top-5-reasons-social-media/

1) ROI – Return on Ignorance: It’s funny, but lot of businesses don’t know that Social Media can be effectively measured. They are still living in an oblivion as to why invest in Social Media when we don’t get the ROI (I meant Return of Investment here.) The fact is Social Media can be so effectively measured that you can pin-point every single user, comment, update or even a tag. Ask me, I’ve made reports for our clients. The reports are so in-depth that they are self-explanatory with facts & figures.”

The number one reason Nikhil gives for companies not taking social media seriously is that they don’t understand how well social media can tell you who your users are and what they like about your product. Big Live takes these measurements, so to speak, down to the minute detail to help content providers and partner companies understand who is watching their content and why.

Knowledge is power.

Social Media News

News that’s pertinent to Big Live, you, the Internet…basically, everyone.

Check out this report from GigaOm, predicting that traditional TV will be going the way of the print industry:

http://gigaom.com/video/buckle-up-traditional-tv-is-in-for-a-heck-of-a-ride/

“A substantial percentage of programming will have on demand, time shifted and interactive capabilities. New formats of programming with embedded interactive applications will emerge, and social TV will take off.”

We think that while on demand viewing is great (we offer on demand and broadcasted shows), it takes the social experience away from the viewer. When you can watch a video any time, the incentive to watch it at the same time as someone else is substantially diminished.

Big Live puts the social back into the viewing experience by allowing you to see who else is watching whenever you decide to watch, allowing you to chat with that person (of course), and to do so whether you’re watching an on demand or broadcast show.

On Big Live, when you show up to a broadcast show, you are automatically synchronized with everyone watching, so you can make relevant real-time comments about the video that’s playing. If, however, you want to watch a show on demand, from start to finish, you can still chat with anyone who shows up, even if they have just clicked play at the beginning of the video.

Voila, social TV, anyway you look at it.

We’re all for it!
