Social Media Monday

Hey Everyone,

Every Monday Big Live brings you an interesting morsel from the world of social media news. Today this article by Liz Shannon Miller over at Newteevee.com caught our eye: http://gigaom.com/video/facebook-web-originals/

“What’s intriguing about Facebook distribution is that it’s not really a platform tailor-made for watching video; there’s no embedding and the sharing interface is clunky. Plus, in the case of Aim High, requiring the audience to be logged-in Facebook users is an issue — while Facebook does claim to have more than 800 million active users, limiting access to viewers with Facebook accounts does mean losing a few viewers. The conventional wisdom of web content these days, after all, is that the easier it is for someone to find and watch your show, the more likely it will happen.”

We also believe that Facebook is going to be a great way to organize audiences around web series and tv shows over the next few years, but Miller has a point that Facebook’s video options are extremely limited as far as user engagement, sharing, embedding, and the like.

Good thing Big Live has a great user-friendly Facebook widget, where you can have your video playing right on your Facebook fan page, complete with a chatroom to keep viewers engaged and watching, and embed button for easy, instantaneous sharing to anywhere on the web. As always, for free. If you want one, just ask us!

Or, if you want to see one in action, check out Megan & Liz’s widget here: http://www.facebook.com/MeganandLiz?sk=app_101056733337667

Announcing the Launch of Megan & Liz Chat!

Hey everyone, remember when we made a show for Megan & Liz (http://meganandliz.com/) the talented twins from Michigan? They’re singers and songwriters in their own right, and they cover all the best songs.

We just launched a widget on their Facebook page, where you can hang out, watch their videos, chat with other fans, and *sometimes* maybe even with Megan & Liz themselves!

Enjoy, and don’t forget to share it with your friends by using the Invite Facebook Friends tab.

For today’s video of the day we wanted to spotlight the music blog BYOW (Bring Your Own Wine). We love their cool, eclectic and indie song collection, which they update every Wednesday—we should know because they have a channel on their site!

Social Media News

News that’s pertinent to Big Live, you, the Internet…basically, everyone.

Check out this report from GigaOm, predicting that traditional TV will be going the way of the print industry:

http://gigaom.com/video/buckle-up-traditional-tv-is-in-for-a-heck-of-a-ride/

“A substantial percentage of programming will have on demand, time shifted and interactive capabilities. New formats of programming with embedded interactive applications will emerge, and social TV will take off.”

We think that while on demand viewing is great (we offer on demand and broadcasted shows), it takes the social experience away from the viewer. When you can watch a video any time, the incentive to watch it at the same time as someone else is substantially diminished.

Big Live puts the social back into the viewing experience by allowing you to see who else is watching whenever you decide to watch, allowing you to chat with that person (of course), and to do so whether you’re watching an on demand or broadcast show.

On Big Live, when you show up to a broadcast show, you are automatically synchronized with everyone watching, so you can make relevant real-time comments about the video that’s playing. If, however, you want to watch a show on demand, from start to finish, you can still chat with anyone who shows up, even if they have just clicked play at the beginning of the video.

Voila, social TV, anyway you look at it.

We’re all for it!

And Now, Your Feature Presenation

(Look for posts like this one to get updates on our new features and how to use them.)

The “Invite Your Facebook Friends” Feature on Big Live

The Invite Your Facebook Friends feature is essentially a tab below the Big Live video player that shows users only their Facebook friends who are currently online, and allows them to immediately invite any of these friends by clicking on them. The friend who is invited instantly gets a Facebook chat from the user asking if they want to come watch, and providing a direct link.

This Facebook chat invitation is different from a Facebook post, a Tweet, or an email invitation because it’s personal and instantaneous. A Facebook post or Tweet is seen by every follower, which means the user isn’t actively selecting which friends they’re interested in watching a show with.

More importantly, a Facebook post, Tweet or email doesn’t apply only to those users who are currently online. It’s a static message, and most recipients will see the invitation long after the show has ended and their friend has left Big Live. The “Invite Your Facebook Friends” feature dramatically increases the likelihood of friends actually following the link to the Big Live show, and enjoying it socially, together.

I have the Big Live video player embedded on my website. What does this feature mean for me?

Every website wants to see its traffic increase, and its users engaging around content published there. If you have the Big Live video player embedded on your website, users who invite their Facebook friends from the player on your site will be giving their friends the link that directs them to your site’s player…which means more potential hits for you every time one of your readers is using the Big Live video player on your website.

I really want to watch my favorite show with my Facebook friends who are online. Tell me how to do it!

It’s great to log on to Big Live, click on a channel that interests you, and start chatting away with whomever is watching. Sometimes, though, you want to bring your friends into the mix.

Step 1. Make sure to sign in on www.biglive.com using your Facebook account, not just your email address.

Step 2. Click the “Invite Facebook Friends” tab (below the video player).

Step 3. Choose which friends you want to invite to watch the show and chat with you.

Your friends will get a Facebook chat message inviting them to come watch the show, with a link to the page where you’re waiting.

And that’s how, with just a few clicks of the mouse, you can watch your favorite episode of Family Guy, or “Banksy’s Coming to Dinner”, or the latest episode of The Bachelorette, and share the experience with friends, whether they’re across town or across the country.

Now get out there and start a party on Big Live with any—or all!—of your Facebook friends.
